Darkel was a very interesting study, as it presented a chance to separate out who brings what to the table in the duo. Unfortunately, and as I expected, it was largely characterized by the weirdness that JB brings to the music, which works wonderfully in Air when balanced out with Godin's sense of funk and groove, but didn't work for me standing alone. I'm much more a fan of Godin's solo work (really just looking at Premeries Symptomes as a guide to what Air with little to no JB influence sounds like).

Air is awesome, but I wouldn't really compare them to Daft Punk. Totally different styles.

They're a very different band to DP. I enjoy Daft's work, but it often feels like, despite a veneer of craziness and creativity (not that it doesn't legitimately have those things), they often (certainly these days) shoot to something that's very middle of the road. It's the showmanship and the fanfare and the personas that seems to be driving them these days, at least in my estimation. They're still making great music, but it has started to feel contrived at points, and I'm not a fan of that.

Air takes a lot more chances, IMO. They're a lot more hit and miss as a result, but I think the high-points become far more satisfying. I don't always get all of it, but I respect the hell out of them for doing things that are liable to alienate anyone and everyone; they make music for themselves, and that much is apparent.

I'm going to be honest here, and don't flog me too much, but Sexy Boy really killed it for me with Air. It took me a long time to get over that song when I first heard it 800 years ago (it seems that long ago...I'm getting old).

But maybe I should give them another chance. Perhaps next time I am at the library, I'll see if they have any Air albums and give them a listen.

Check out the other albums. Moon Safari was a great album, but I think they've done even better work since then.

When my favorite band They Might Be Giants did some side projects I found the results to be things that are virtually indistinguishable from what the band releases as a whole.
